Time Waits for No One - Jim Gaetz

My ears tingled in the cold as I walked to work this morning.  It was about 5 below but I could already tell that we were in for another beautiful brisk sunny day.  I tried to pray but my mind kept wandering off in a dozen different directions.  I thought of all the changes that were taking place along the way – old buildings being torn down and new ones going up, all in the name of progress.

Our office is situated directly opposite the little street that I grew up on.  It’s only a block long and our old house has long since been demolished and replaced by a pub and now a huge warehouse is being built adjacent to it.  I can remember the military owning that property when I was a kid and there were always lots of soldiers and army vehicles around.  Then it was a feed and lumber yard and later a wood products place and finally I remember the whole building burning down one night in a huge fire.  Our once quiet little neighbourhood now has only one tiny house remaining on the entire street.  The rest have been replaced with apartments and offices and commercial units.  Most of the neighbours of my parents generation have long since passed on and been replaced by a younger crowd that have come to start their families and businesses.

Buildings and people have a limited life span and when their time is up they vanish with often very little evidence that they ever existed.  My dad happens to be remembered by a sign at each end of the block saying ‘Gaetz Street’, but no other signs have been put up in memory of those that lived there.  Most of us will never have streets named after us but fortunately we can also be remembered by the impact we make on the lives of those around us.  We are remembered more for what we give than for what we get.  At some funerals only a handful of people show up because the individual has touched very few people in their lifetime.  God has placed us here to make a difference in those that He brings into our lives. Life on this earth is extremely short!  Let’s make our lives count!

Psalm 39:4-6 “Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.  You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you.  Each man’s life is but a breath.”
