Last week as a church we studied the story of the lost son out of Luke 15.

Here’s the scene when the son returns home:

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.” Luke 15:20-24

“And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,” Luke 19:41

Jesus was so full of love and compassion that he cried over a city.  I feel bad because I have never felt that way about Chilliwack.  This place is my home and so many people that live here are hurting and need Jesus.  Why am I not moved for my city the way Jesus was for his?  How often do I pray for Chilliwack? How often do I dream up ways to transform this city for Christ?  The answer is: not often enough.

Earthquake in Haiti

On Tuesday, January 12 at about 3:00 pm a massive 7.0M (moment magnitude scale) earthquake hit near the capital city of Port-au-Prince, followed closely by two aftershocks, both over 5.0M. The Evangelique l'ecole de la Paix (EEP School) and Haiti Children's Home (HCH Orphanage) in Mirebalais (which is just over 40 miles North-East of Port-au-Prince) have reported that they felt the earthquake shake very violently, but no damage was done to the Home or the School, which has over 75 kids sponsored. This is very good news! Many of us who belong to the SouthSide Church family sponsor children at the school and/or support the orphanage.

Some of you may have heard that two SouthSide Church members, Steve Johnson (Hungry for Life) and Gary Baars, where making a trip to Haiti this week to visit the School and Orphanage in Mirebalais - thankfully there was a last minute change of plans so both Steve and Gary did not make the trip and are still in BC. We are thankful that both are safe.

Today many agencies in Haiti are scrambling to address urgent needs. We are not sure yet how the situation in that region may end up affecting either HCH or the EEP School. SouthSide Church is working on identifying how we as a Church family can increase our support for the Haitian people during this crisis. We are staying close to the situation and will provide you with more updated information on Sunday morning.

Please continue to pray that God will be close to the Haitian people, that He will strengthen those who are serving the broken and that He would guide us as we seek His direction on how we can truly understand and live out James 1:27 - "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress."

Grace be with you.
