Missionaries - Justin and Tammy Hettinga

Hi, we are Justin and Tammy Hettinga and we have been part of the SouthSide church family since 1994. We have two boys, Caleb (December 97) and Jesse (September 99). We are currently living and working in Cusco, Peru, South America. We work for Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Tammy and I began our journey with Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1997 and we did our training with them at their Canadian training center in 1998 and 1999. After doing our Spanish language training in Costa Rica in 2000 we headed off to Peru to begin our first assignment. We were assigned to work among the Cusco Quechua people who live in the southern Andes region of Peru.  Here is our “Purpose Statement"

Equipping the Quechuas of southern Peru, until the year 2010, in active, sustainable use of the Quechua scriptures.

In 1988 the Peruvian Bible Society along with the Canadian Bible Society, published the Old and New Testaments in Cusco Quechua. However, this Bible has not become widely used. This is primarily due to the fact that very few can read (approximately 3% are literate in Quechua). So we have begun to work alongside the churches, building capacity into them to read and write and to pass this skill on to others.  There is also a great need for extra biblical materials for the training of pastors, so we are also training people in writing, translating, publishing and printing. There is a tremendous hunger here for the Word of God and we count it a blessing to play a part in what God is doing.
