I am sure many of you remember the Heaven’s Gate cult of the late 90’s. They were a group of people who believed that the world was going to “cleanse” itself and therefore had to get off the planet immediately. They believed that a spaceship was hiding behind a comet that was near Earth. The leader and 38 followers killed themselves in order to board this spaceship that was hiding behind the comet. They all wore identical tracksuits and drank poison.
Many people laughed when they heard this news in 1997. People couldn’t believe that people would kill themselves because they wanted to board a spaceship. The funny thing is though, that there are many people today who are just as easily deceived.
Oprah has many people under her “new age” wing. She has deceived many into her way of thinking just because she has a talk show. Many people thought/think the book “The Da Vinci Code” was all fact. Scientology is a religion made up by a man who was quoted as saying, “If you want to make money just start your own religion.”
The point is that there are a lot of people with strange ideas. We shouldn’t jump on board someone’s idea just because of how they present it. We need to look at the facts and, most importantly, see how everything lines up with the Bible.
