Bill Martens - Mike Mannes

I don’t have a lot of 80 year old friends, but Bill Martens was my friend, and the way he lived his life taught me a lot.

Bill was one of the few people in my life that could get me to slow down.  I find that most of the time I live my life at a ridiculous pace, but for some reason, when I would talk to Bill, I would slow down, relax and enjoy the moment.  I often thought that Bill typified the idea of “Be Still and Know that I am God”.   I learned from Bill that it’s ok to take a breath once in a while, to relax, especially for a conversation with a good friend.

A couple weeks ago we were driving along and my wife used the phrase, “The proof is in the pudding”.  Our daughter was driving in the truck with us and was a bit confused over what that phrase meant.  The best example I could give my daughter would be that the proof of the significance of Bill’s life lies in the quality of his family.

Bill’s life is validated, celebrated and honored by the quality of those he left behind.  I have had the privilege of knowing many of Bill’s family in many different areas of my life.  I can honestly say, I’m not sure whether I’ve ever come across such an amazing, encouraging, gifted, loyal, and fun group in one family.  As we come close to Father’s Day, I can only hope and pray that I can leave a legacy like Bill did with my kids and grandkids (some day).

Thanks Bill, for reminding me to slow down once in a while.  Thanks for giving me a living, breathing picture of legacy.  Looking forward to seeing you again not too long from now.
