Are you wise? … or do you just know a lot? - Carolyn Martens

Carolyn (75x75)As I was reading through the book of Proverbs the other day I stopped when I came to verse 7 of Chapter 1 where is says,  “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.  Only fools despise wisdom and discipline.”  The more I read the more I realized that many people can have knowledge, but wisdom is something that is much harder to achieve and fewer people actually have it.  In an age of information, knowledge is plentiful, but wisdom is scarce.

Knowledge is defined as an acquaintance with facts, truth or principles, as from study or investigation.  So to have knowledge, all I have to do is to be acquainted with facts.  Facts that I can get from the internet, tv, books, or listening to people around me.  There are so many ways to get knowledge and so many different kinds of knowledge to have.  One of the most annoying kinds of person is someone who is a know-it-all, has an opinion about everything, is closed to anything new and refuses to learn.  Solomon calls this kind of person a fool.

Wisdom on the other hand is an entirely different thing.  The definition of wisdom is a quality or state of being wise, having knowledge of what is true coupled with just judgment as to action or discernment.  Wisdom means far more than simply knowing a lot.  It should be an attitude that affects every aspect of our lives.  Having God's wisdom means having the ability to cope with life in a God-honoring way.  Wisdom is gained through a constant process of growing.  We have to trust and honor God, study the bible and continually ask God to reveal his wisdom to us.  Lifelong choices must be made and when we sin or make mistakes, we have to learn from our errors.  Wisdom is something that is developed over time.

James 1:5 says, “If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask him, and he will gladly tell you.  He will not resent your asking.”  James is not talking about knowledge, but a wisdom that will give us the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances.  Whenever we need wisdom, we can ask God and he will supply what we need.  Wisdom begins with respect for God and leads to right living, and results in increased ability to tell right from wrong.  Wisdom is letting go of our self-centered lives and completely living God-centered lives.

Trust is God - he will make you truly wise.
